Their paths to God’s purpose led them together.

Many know the heroic story of Jim Elliot’s violent death in 1956, killed along with four other missionaries by a primitive Ecuadorian tribe they were seeking to reach. Many also know the prolific legacy of Elisabeth Elliot, whose inspiring influence on generations of believers through print, broadcast, and personal testimony continues to resonate, even after her own death in 2015.

What many don’t know is the remarkable story of how these two stalwart personalities—single-mindedly devoted to pursuing God’s will for their young lives, certain their future callings would require them to sacrifice forever the blessings of marriage—found their hearts intertwined. Their paths to God’s purpose led them together.

Now, for the first time, their only child—daughter Valerie Elliot Shepard—unseals never-before-published letters and private journals that capture in first-person intimacy the attraction, struggle, drama, and devotion that became a most unlikely love story.

Riveting for old and young alike, this moving account of their personal lives shines as a gold mine of lived-out truth, hard-fought purity, and an insider’s view on two beloved Christian figures.

  • Devotedly lets us listen in on a love story that is beautiful in its own right. But when you consider that it was the love story of two people who would become world-renowned missionary heroes, it’s an amazing opportunity to glimpse some of the tests and trials that would purify their love and strengthen their faith.

We hear their humanity, yes. We see their very real frustration with each other, at times. The ups and downs and unknowns as they waited on God for direction. We watch them each lay out a fleece time and time again and then delight when God graciously makes His answers so very clear. We see them wait, with no freedom to go any further, on the matter of their “uncommon friendship.”

But what Devotedly makes so very clear is that Jim and Elisabeth were two very ordinary human beings with passions and sins common to each of us. Two ordinary people who prayed fervently for an unordinary hunger for God. Two people who looked purely to His Word for guidance. Two people who loved each other passionately but loved God more.
  • In Devotedly, we’re given a sampling of the correspondence between two young people who were in love with Jesus Christ and each other, in that order, and who desired to do only God’s will. That, in and of itself, is rare and refreshing, especially in our current culture.
At some point early on, they realized they were attracted to each other and began a friendship, but both believed God would call them to be single missionaries. They talked about their desire and wrote over the course of five or so years while guarding their own hearts until they were sure God had given them the green light to pursue their relationship. We get a glimpse of their private thoughts, inner turmoil, but mostly we see that their desire for each other was secondary to what God wanted for them. And they were prepared to do whatever God called them to do, even if it meant walking away from their relationship.
Full of personal thoughts, letters, insight, and quotable quotes in true Elliot style, this book will bless.

We see their humanness. We see feet of clay. We see faulty thinking and the ups and downs of emotions and discouragement. If you were expecting perfection in these two people, you won’t find it here or in anyone else for that matter. But what you will find is the honest dialog and ups and downs of their courtship. You’ll see how they determine to maintain purity before marriage. It will give you the courage to fight your own flesh and mind when you find yourself toying with compromise. It will give you a high view of marriage and how each marriage partner stands before God as beloved and led by His hand. Very instructive.

  • This is the first book I bought in a long time when I didn’t wait for it to go on sale or become available at the library. I have always been an Elizabeth Elliott fan. I think I’ve read every book she’s written. So when I heard about this new publication, I bought it immediately. And it didn’t disappoint.

Devotedly written by their daughter, is like a sequel/extended version of Elizabeth’s Passion and Purity, which I read in college and revolutionized the way I viewed dating. It is a chronological progress of Jim and Betsy’s love story, taken from their letters and journals. In it, you see their temptations and struggles to know what the best way was to serve Christ. They had undeniable, serious attraction for each other, but as wonderful that may be, they were ready to give it up for the cause of the gospel.

Their story made marriage attractive to me, yet they were so willing to do without it, if it meant they could serve God better. Young people could learn so much from them, whose wholehearted love and devotion to God led them to the ends of the earth. They didn’t make marriage a life goal above the pursuit of Christ. They were ready to deny themselves, embrace and pursue singleness, if that meant it would make them better Christians.

In today’s culture obsessed with sex, and even in our churches’ emphasis on marriage, this book’s message needs to be heard. It is a disservice to the Church when singleness is treated as an undesirable state of being that needs to be abandoned as soon as possible. When one’s heart is fully Christ’s, married or not, it leads to the greatest benefit to his/her life, the church and our society.
  • This is a sweeping, epic love story that brought all Jim and Elisabeth Elliot’s individual writings together in a beautiful culmination of God’s love story of redemption. Appropriately, it was written by the manifestation of their love—their daughter, Valerie.

I loved this, and could hardly put it down! I enjoyed that they were both holy and human, and needed a savior just as much as I do. They are still my heroes, and I desire to emulate their love for the each other, their love for the Lord and the action it produced.
  • Elisabeth Elliot is my favorite author of all time. I’ve read many of her books and when I saw her daughter was writing one and publishing her parent’s journal entries, I ordered it immediately. I was not disappointed! This book is wonderful and gives you a true look into their early missionary life.
  • It is so refreshing to read the letters of Jim and Elizabeth Elliot, their devotion to God before their devotion to each other is inspiring.
